Altmetrics: the use of new metrics in information units

DESCRIPTION

In recent years, new metrics have been proposed to assess the impact and dissemination of scientific publications in social networks and Web 2.0. This course provides a very practical and professionally oriented introduction to the world of altmetrics and their potential usefulness within information units. Firstly, they are historically framed within the different types of indicators for the evaluation of scientific activity and defined, clearly establishing their potential and their limitations. The different social networks used so far in the scientific literature are presented, as well as the main tools available to measure the impact of scientific work in these social networks. Throughout the course, special emphasis will be placed on offering practical content that will enable students to apply it later on. Likewise, debate will be promoted, transmitting a critical and objective perspective of the potential use of these indicators. Finally, several case studies will be proposed to provide students with the basic knowledge to generate reports based on altmetric indicators.
