Expert handling of citation indexes and databases for bibliometric purposes

DESCRIPTION

This course introduces students to the expert handling of scientific databases and citation indexes for data collection and the analysis of citations and scientific production. The course aims to achieve the following objectives: 1) to learn about the main international scientific citation databases and indexes, 2) to learn about the advantages and limitations of the coverage of each of them, as well as the basic characteristics they offer from a technical point of view, and 3) to handle the main scientific citation databases and indexes efficiently and professionally. This course is divided into three modules, each focusing on a product family. Thus, the first module focuses on the handling of the Thomson Reuters citation index family. The second module focuses on Scopus. Finally, the third module is dedicated to the management of the Google Scholar family of products, focusing mainly on the management of the Publish or Perish software as well as the Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics evaluation products.

STRUCTURE

Module 1 – Introduction

  • Introduction to the expert handling of scientific database and citation indexes.
  • Course objectives: coverage, advantages, limitations and technical features of databases and citation indexes.

Module 2 – Thomson Reuters

  • Familiarisation and efficient handling of Web of Science using Thomson Reuters citation indexes.

Module 3 – Scopus

  • Detailed inmersion in the Scopus database and its characteristics.

Module 4 – Google Scholar Family

  • Introduction and use of the Publish or Perish software.
  • Using Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics.
