How to defend research careers and publications with bibliometric indicators?

DESCRIPTION

One of the main procedures used to evaluate the performance of research personnel is through bibliometric indicators. Researchers themselves are often asked to include various bibliometric indicators in their scientific curriculum or in the evaluation process of their publications, as occurs in ANECA and CNEAI. It is therefore important to know what the most common bibliometric indicators are, how they are calculated, what sources exist, etc… so that we can present them properly and correctly when defending our curricula. In this course we will focus firstly on how to calculate the number of citations, the h-index, the normalised impact, the international collaboration rate, the number of highly cited papers and how, based on these, we can produce reports that summarise our scientific career. Secondly, we will focus on the most common sources and indicators for the defence of individual publications so that they can be used in the evaluation processes of ANECA and CNEAI.

STRUCTURE

Module 1– Introduction

  • Introduction to bibliometric indicators and their importance in the evaluation of research performance.
  • Requirements of bibliometric indicators in scientific curricula and in evaluation processes such as ANECA and CNEAI.

Module 2 – Calculation and interpretation of indicators

  • How to calculate and understand the number of citations, h-index, normalised impact, international collaboration rate and number of highly cited papers.
  • Generation of reports summarising a researcher’s scientific career based on these indicators.

Module 3 – Defending CVs

  • Exploration of common sources and indicators for individualised defence of publications.
  • Effective use of these indicators in ANECA and CNEAI evaluation processes.
